Raymond Davis has really kicked off the anti US demonstrations in Pakistan. The already frustrated people have become more hateful of the Americans. When I say America, I do not mean the American continent or the American people but to be precise it’s the power intoxicated arrogant people in the corridors of power of DC.
The developments in Tunisia and Egypt have provided the inspiration to Muslims all over the world that they can have their say. This is going to be a chain reaction in different Muslim countries of the world; a farewell to US puppets. Pakistan is considered to be a ripe case; Raymond Davis has come as a catalyst. The people of Pakistan have already tasted the fruit of street power through long marches that culminated on 16th of March, 2009 when the Judiciary was reinstated. Now the people feel that they too can react and bring about the change that’s more congenial, responsive and responsible towards the need of the people and the state of Pakistan.
The unchecked drone attacks have made Pakistan a laughing stock, the national pride has been thrown to shreds. Not only that but the repeated violation of the law of the land by the Americans in particular and some other countries in general made the people feel very weak. The icing came when Raymond Davis (if this is his true identity) tasted blood in broad daylight in one of the busiest and densely populated neighbourhood, Mozang Chongi of Lahore. Today every Pakistani from every walk of life feels humiliated, insulted and exploited by the US and her agents who control the reigns of the government in Islamabad.
Pakistan society at large feel that had it been for the people in power, Davis would have been long set free and flown out. But the immediate peoples’ reaction has blocked any out of the court deal that the Interior Ministry was contemplating. The kiths of Ibadur Rahman, a man who was crushed under the wheels of the follow up vehicle refused to take the body till the police registered the case. Within minutes of the incident Rana Faisal, a senior police officer talking to the media termed it as a dacoity case. One wonders how without even an initial investigation he could term it as dacoity and granted the killer the right to self defence? The Punjab Chief Minister should order an inquiry of Rana Faisal for such irresponsible attitude and behaviour knowing fully well that it could have a very strong backlash on the streets.
People expect General Ashfaq Kayani to play a role in line with the national aspirations and sentiments whereby Davis’s possible linkages with the terrorist groups should be thoroughly investigated.
The court was moved and people felt relieved when the Lahore high court issued the orders for Raymond’s custody and placing him on exit control list, meaning that now he cannot leave the country before the legal process is completed. People are so infuriated that they are demanding that Davis be hanged publically at Qurtaba Chowk in Mozang where he killed these two boys. The kin of all the three killed have refused to accept blood money, they want blood for blood and at the same spot.
